Designing a Modern Mosque Website That Connects Community
When I was requested by my employer to redesign the mosque’s website, I saw it as an opportunity to be creating something which is more than just a digital presence. Crafting a platform that truly reflects the spirit, values and contemporary offerings of the mosque’s vibrant community. This is at the core of the redesign.
Identifying the Problem: A Dated Site with No Identity
The old website felt outdated and lacked a clear brand identity. It didn’t reflect the mosque’s growth into a modern, community-centred space. The site failed to showcase key offerings like nature retreats, workshops, and wellness hikes. Its design and user experience didn’t match the mosque’s inclusive and forward-thinking approach.
On top of that, the site was built on an old version of WordPress. This made it difficult to update and locked the team into a rigid system. Content on the homepage was overwhelming. Users often felt confused by the amount of information. Feedback confirmed this, many visitors didn’t know what was going on or where to look. Because of these issues, we decided to start fresh. Scrapping the old site allowed us to rebuild with a clear focus: modern design, easy navigation, and a digital presence that truly represents the mosque’s mission.
Choosing the Right Platform: WordPress for Flexibility
I chose WordPress for its ease of use, powerful plugin ecosystem, and flexibility. Moreover it allows me to build a visually engaging, responsive site while ensuring that the team can manage updates internally with minimal technical knowledge.
A Design Rooted in Nature and Community
Inspired by the mosque’s deep connection with community and nature, we designed the new site to reflect the heart of its mission. We chose calming earth tones, organic shapes, and authentic imagery from the centre to immediately evoke a sense of peace and belonging. From the moment visitors land on the homepage, they feel welcomed and connected.
To highlight the mosque’s role as a modern community hub, we paired clean, legible typography with intuitive navigation and responsive layouts. As a result, the design balances contemporary style with spiritual depth—creating a user experience that is both inviting and meaningful.
Mobile-First, Responsive Design
As majority of website visitors come through their mobile devices, core priority was responsiveness. Carefully designed and tested for a seamless experience across all screen sizes. Layouts and menus are all optimised for easy access and readability on smartphones and tablets.
Seamless Integrations: Mailchimp, PayPal, and Google Analytics
To support outreach and engagement, I integrated Mailchimp for increased newsletter sign-ups. This enables the mosque to easily share updates about events, programs, and announcements with its growing community. It helps the community to stay in the loop ensuring they don’t miss out.
PayPal integration allows users to securely purchase tickets for workshops, register for retreats, and make donations, from within the site, with no manual handling required.
Additionally, Google Analytics was implemented to track user behaviour, monitor traffic sources and better understand how visitors engage with the site. This data helps the mosque make informed decisions about future content, campaigns and improvements.
Purpose-Built Landing Pages for Workshops
One of the most impactful improvements was the creation of dedicated landing pages for core workshops and courses which are delivered both online and across the UK. These pages are designed to:
Highlight the benefits of each event with clear calls to action
Showcase testimonials, schedules, and instructor profiles
Automatically update with new course dates, requiring minimal admin effort
This not only enhances the user experience but also streamlines internal operations, allowing the team to focus more on serving the community rather than managing tech.
Outcome: A Platform That Embodies Purpose
As a result, the final product became a dynamic, nature-inspired digital hub. It mirrors the mosque’s physical space and spiritual energy. From the first scroll to the final click, the site welcomes, informs, and engages visitors. It encourages participation in programs and builds a stronger connection with the community.
More importantly, this project went far beyond a typical redesign. It focused on creating a digital extension of a sacred, welcoming space. The site embraces modern tools while staying grounded in tradition and nature.
Looking ahead, the design is future-proof. It ensures the site can grow with the mosque and serve its evolving community.
